Dr. Jagdish Gandhi: Peace through Education
(Reporter Richard Tsai, New York)
Ever heard of a school that holds more than 47,000 students? The City Montessori School (CMS), the world’s largest school, is located in Lucknow, India. Founded in 1959 by Dr. Jagdish Gandhi and his wife Bharti, the school started in humble backgrounds, with merely five students and a budget of less than ten US dollars. Since then, however, the number of students kept growing due to people’s word of mouth.
Dr. Gandhi founded the school based on his belief of peace through education. Unlike most educational systems that emphasize materialistic learning, the CMS also focuses on human and spiritual learnings as a tool to foster love and peace in the minds of students. Dr. Gandhi believes that instilling the idea of love and peace early on in children’s minds can allow them to look beyond the material comforts in life, and contribute to the world’s wellbeing.
Dr. Gandhi, 75, has been promoting the idea of uniting people’s hearts to resolve international crises and conflicts, through international events. After learning about this year’s global launch of An Era of Conscience movement, a movement that hopes to inspire everyone’s kind hearts to carry out good deeds, Dr. Gandhi passionately supported it, stating that the movement can make an impact to the world. “The movement of An Era of Conscience has the potential to bring about the significant political, social conformation,” said Gandhi. He further pointed out the movement’s importance. “Their value motive of uniting the fame of peace across the world can indeed create a butterfly effect. The movement can radically change the world’s destiny of mankind and direct the leaping goodness in abundance.”

Dr. Gandhi also flew to New York to participate in the 2014 FOWPAL World Summit on Love and Peace. The summit was attended by UN ambassadors, NGO leaders, and elite leaders from all circles to discuss the importance of upholding everyone’s conscience in order to achieve world peace and sustainable development. During the summit, he mentioned the need to teach morality at a very young age and use love to nurture children, allowing them to love one another and thus, create a lasting peace in the world.
An Era of Conscience movement aims to unite everyone’s kind hearts and conscience to serve as a catalyst to inspire each of us to do the right things and make the right choices, all for the welfare of the world. The initiator of the Movement of An Era of Conscience, Dr. Hong Tao-Tze, said, “With conscience comes a peaceful world. With happiness comes a joyful family.”
